Introduction: Today we are going to focus on proper nouns. A proper noun is a particular name given to a person, place or thing.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Start by introducing the concept of a proper noun and discuss what is a proper noun.

  2. Discuss the definition of a proper noun and the difference between a common noun and a proper noun.

  3. Introduce examples of proper nouns, i.e. Stephen, Sydney, Great Wall of China.

  4. Have students do a fill in the blank activity to practice identifying proper nouns.

  5. Watch a video on proper nouns and discuss.

Questioning:

Throughout the lesson, the teacher should ask open-ended questions to test the students understanding of what is a proper noun and to show examples of proper nouns to the students.

Assessment:

Administering a quiz can assess the students’ understanding of the definition and usage of proper nouns.

Differentiation:

For students who are struggling with the concept of a proper noun, the teacher can facilitate additional instruction in small groups and/or provide one-on-one assistance.

Plenary:

At the end of the lesson, the teacher can ask the students to define a proper noun and to provide examples of proper nouns.
