Lesson Plan: Buying Clothes and Getting Bargains in French

Subject: French Grade Level: Year 8 (Secondary Children)

Introduction: - Begin the lesson by showing a video clip of a French market or a shopping scenario in France to engage students and introduce the topic. - Ask students if they have ever been to a market or a store where they had to buy clothes or negotiate prices. - Explain that in today’s lesson, they will learn how to use the verbs “acheter” (to buy) and “vendre” (to sell) in French, as well as how to buy clothes and get bargains.

Lesson Outline: 1. Warm-up Activity (5 minutes): - Show a short video clip or display pictures of different clothing items. - Ask students to name the items in French and write them on the board. - Review the vocabulary together as a class.

  1. Introduction to Verbs “Acheter” and “Vendre” (10 minutes):
    • Introduce the verbs “acheter” and “vendre” and their meanings.
    • Write the verbs on the board and explain their conjugation in the present tense.
    • Provide examples of sentences using these verbs and ask students to repeat after you.
  2. Buying Clothes Vocabulary (10 minutes):
    • Introduce vocabulary related to buying clothes, such as “un pantalon” (pants), “une robe” (dress), “un t-shirt” (t-shirt), etc.
    • Use flashcards or visual aids to help students associate the words with the corresponding clothing items.
    • Practice pronunciation and repeat the words as a class.
  3. Role-Play Activity (15 minutes):
    • Divide the class into pairs or small groups.
    • Provide each group with a scenario where they have to buy clothes from a French market or store.
    • Encourage students to use the verbs “acheter” and “vendre” in their role-play conversations.
    • Circulate around the classroom, monitoring and assisting students as needed.
  4. Questioning and Assessment (10 minutes):
    • Ask students questions related to the lesson content, such as:
      • “Comment dit-on ‘to buy’ en français?” (How do we say ‘to buy’ in French?)
      • “Qu’est-ce que tu achèterais si tu avais 50 euros?” (What would you buy if you had 50 euros?)
    • Assess students’ understanding through their responses and participation.

Differentiation: - For students who need additional support, provide sentence starters or a word bank to assist them during the role-play activity. - For advanced students, challenge them to create more complex sentences using the verbs “acheter” and “vendre” in different tenses.

Plenary: - Summarize the main points of the lesson and review the vocabulary and verbs learned. - Show a short video clip or display pictures of a French market or store again and ask students to describe what they see using the new vocabulary and verbs. - Encourage students to share any new insights or experiences they gained from the lesson.
