Objective: SWBAT identify and analyze how literary devices are used in The Great Gatsby Chapter 6.

Materials: - Copies of The Great Gatsby Chapter 6 - Chalkboard/ whiteboard and chalk/markers - Whiteboard markers

Time: 45 minutes

Procedures:

  1. (5 min) Introduction: Explain to students that literary devices are techniques authors use to tell a story and draw in the reader. They enhance and deepen the reader’s experience. Examples of literary devices can be found in all kinds of literature from novels, poetry, plays, and even songs.

  2. (5 mins) Pre-reading Activity: On the board, list some literary devices such as symbolism and foreshadowing. Ask students to come up with some examples of literary devices that they can think of.

  3. (10 mins) Guided Reading: Pass out copies of The Great Gatsby Chapter 6 to students and ask them to read it. As they read, encourage students to identify any literary devices they come across.

  4. (10 mins) Class Discussion: Lead a discussion with the class and ask students to share any literary devices they identified while reading the Chapter. Encourage students to provide examples of how they think these devices are used.

  5. (15 mins) Analysis/Conclusion: Instruct students to get into small groups of 4-5, and give each group one of the literary devices discussed in the guided reading and discussion. Ask them to analyze and discuss how this device was used in the chapter. Have each group present their findings to the class.

Conclusion: (5 mins) Have students discuss what they have learned and how this knowledge can be applied to other works of literature.
