Lesson Plan Title: Exploring the Past through Personal Connections

Desired Outcome: I can make a personal link to the past by exploring items or images connected with important individuals or special events in my life.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify important individuals or special events in their lives.
  • Students will be able to explore items or images connected with these individuals or events.
  • Students will be able to make personal connections to the past through these items or images.

Materials:

  • Pictures of important individuals or special events in students’ lives
  • Items related to these individuals or events (e.g. toys, clothes, souvenirs)
  • Chart paper and markers
  • Storybooks related to historical events or figures

Introduction (10 minutes):

  • Begin by asking students if they have ever heard stories about their parents, grandparents, or other family members when they were young.
  • Ask students if they have any special items or pictures that remind them of important events or people in their lives.
  • Explain that today, we will be exploring the past by looking at items and pictures that are connected to important individuals or special events in our lives.

Activity 1: Identifying Important Individuals or Special Events (10 minutes):

  • Show students pictures of important individuals or special events in their lives.
  • Ask students to share who or what is in the picture and why it is important to them.
  • Write down their responses on chart paper.

Activity 2: Exploring Items or Images (15 minutes):

  • Ask students to bring out items related to the individuals or events they identified in the previous activity.
  • Encourage students to share why these items are important to them and how they are connected to the past.
  • Show students how to examine the items closely and ask questions about them (e.g. What is it made of? Where did it come from? How old is it?).

Activity 3: Making Personal Connections (15 minutes):

  • Ask students to think about how the items or images they explored are connected to the past.
  • Encourage students to share their thoughts and feelings about the past and how it relates to their own lives.
  • Read storybooks related to historical events or figures to help students make connections between the past and present.

Conclusion (10 minutes):

  • Review the important individuals or special events that students identified at the beginning of the lesson.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned about the past through exploring items or images related to these individuals or events.
  • Encourage students to continue exploring the past through personal connections in their own lives.
