Objectives:

  • Recognize the use of speech marks to identify dialogue in written texts
  • Understand the rules for using speech marks
  • Identify and create simple sentences using speech marks

Activities:

  • Warm Up Activity: Give each student a piece of paper with a written text containing dialogue and ask them to identify which quotation marks (speech marks) have been used.

  • Main Activity: Have the students create a poster with examples of sentences that use speech marks. Follow up by playing a game – pass the sentences – where a student reads a sentence they have created and passes it to the next student who adds part of the sentence and passes it on.

  • Closure Activity: Ask students to give examples of when they have seen speech marks used in texts.

Assessment Strategies:

  • Observe student participation in the warmup and main activities.
  • Grade the posters.
  • Ask students questions throughout the course of the lesson.
  • Review the sentences created in the pass the sentence game.

Timings:

  • 5 minutes: Warm up activity
  • 25 minutes: Main activity
  • 15 minutes: Closure activity

Plenary:

To summarize and assess student knowledge on speech marks, end the lesson by asking students to share examples of sentences they have created using speech marks. Encourage the students to provide a brief explanation of why it is important to use speech marks.
