Subject: English Unit: Punctuation Topic: Using Speech Marks Level: Primary 3

Objectives: - Students will be able to explain the purpose of speech marks in written language. - Students will be able to identify and use appropriate speech marks in written sentences.

Time: 40 minutes

Activities: 1. (5 minutes) Teacher will explain the purpose of speech marks in written language to the class. 2. (10 minutes) Teacher will provide numerous examples of sentences which students can identify whether speech marks are needed or not. 3. (20 minutes) Students in pairs silently generate their own written sentences which require speech marks. 4. (5 minutes) Each pair share their sentences with the class and explain why they have included speech marks.

Assessment: - Teacher will assess student’s understanding by observing their answers to questions and responses to activities. - Teacher will also provide a written worksheet to the students which requires them to use speech marks when completing sentences.

Plenary: - Teacher will ask the class to recall two rules for using speech marks accurately. - Teacher will show a piece of written work which includes examples of speech marks and ask the class to identify any errors.
