Lesson Plan: Digital Literacy

Topic: Exploring Digital Technologies and Problem Solving

Grade Level: Early Level (Nursery to P1)

Curriculum: Scottish Curriculum for Excellence

Desired Outcome: I can explore digital technologies and use what I learn to solve problems and share ideas and thoughts.

Focus: Digital Technologies

Lesson Duration: 45 minutes

Resources: - Interactive whiteboard or projector - Internet-connected devices (e.g., tablets, laptops) - Paper and coloring materials - Digital devices (e.g., tablets, laptops) for students to explore

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by asking the students if they know what digital technologies are. Discuss their responses briefly. 2. Explain that digital technologies are devices or tools that use computers or electronics to help us do things, such as playing games, learning, or communicating with others. 3. Share examples of digital technologies, such as tablets, smartphones, computers, and interactive whiteboards. 4. Introduce the desired outcome: “Today, we will explore digital technologies and learn how to use them to solve problems and share our ideas and thoughts.”

Activity 1: Exploring Digital Technologies (15 minutes): 1. Show the students different digital devices, such as tablets, laptops, and smartphones. Discuss their features and functions. 2. Allow students to explore the devices in small groups or pairs, under adult supervision. 3. Encourage students to touch the screens, navigate through apps or websites, and experiment with different functions. 4. Ask students to share what they discovered or found interesting about the digital devices.

Activity 2: Problem Solving with Digital Technologies (15 minutes): 1. Explain that digital technologies can help us solve problems. Give examples, such as using a tablet to find information or using a computer to draw a picture. 2. Present a simple problem to the students, such as “How can we make a picture of our favorite animal using digital technologies?” 3. Divide the students into small groups and provide them with paper and coloring materials. 4. Instruct each group to choose a favorite animal and discuss how they can use digital technologies to create a picture of it. 5. Allow students to use digital devices (e.g., tablets, laptops) to search for images or use drawing apps to create their pictures. 6. Encourage students to collaborate, share ideas, and help each other solve the problem. 7. Once the pictures are completed, ask each group to present their work and explain how they used digital technologies to solve the problem.

Conclusion (5 minutes): 1. Gather the students together and recap what they have learned about digital technologies and problem-solving. 2. Discuss how digital technologies can be used to share ideas and thoughts with others. 3. Emphasize the importance of exploring and learning about digital technologies to become digitally literate. 4. End the lesson by encouraging students to continue exploring and using digital technologies in their daily lives.

Assessment: - Observe students’ engagement and participation during the activities. - Assess students’ ability to explore digital technologies and use them to solve problems. - Evaluate students’ understanding of the concept of digital literacy through their contributions during discussions and presentations.
