Lesson Plan: Veganism
Level: C1
Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to discuss and express their opinions on veganism, understand the benefits and challenges of a vegan lifestyle, and use appropriate vocabulary related to veganism.
Warm-up (10 minutes): 1. Show students the YouTube video “What is Veganism?” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAN1J4PY6is) and ask them to write down three things they already know about veganism. 2. In pairs, have students share their ideas and discuss their personal opinions on veganism.
Discussion (15 minutes): 1. Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a set of discussion questions related to veganism. Here are some examples: a. What are the main reasons people choose to become vegan? b. What are the potential benefits and challenges of a vegan lifestyle? c. How does veganism impact the environment and animal welfare? d. Do you think it is possible to have a balanced and nutritious diet as a vegan? e. What are some common misconceptions about veganism? 2. Allow students time to discuss the questions within their groups. 3. Bring the class back together and have each group share their thoughts and opinions on one of the questions.
Group Work (20 minutes): 1. Provide each group with a worksheet containing an article from the British Council’s Magazine Zone on veganism (https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/general-english/magazine-zone/veganism). 2. In their groups, students should read the article and discuss the main points, as well as any new information they learned. 3. Encourage students to take notes and highlight any vocabulary related to veganism. 4. After the group discussion, ask each group to present a summary of the article to the class, highlighting the key points and vocabulary.
Assessment (15 minutes): 1. Distribute an individual worksheet with comprehension questions based on the article. 2. Instruct students to answer the questions independently. 3. Collect the worksheets and assess students’ understanding of the article and their ability to use appropriate vocabulary related to veganism.
