Topic: Critical Thinking
Grade Level: Year 11
Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to employ critical thinking skills, identify types of logical fallacies, analyze text using critical thinking, and apply the principle of “fairness” to argumentation.
Materials: Pens, paper, text related to the topic, online resources related to the topic
Time: 60 minutes
Activity I (15 minutes): Introductory activity:
In this activity, students will discuss their understanding and definition of critical thinking. The discussion will help the teacher to determine what students already know about critical thinking and identify any misunderstandings. After the discussion, the teacher will explain the key aspects and types of critical thinking, including inferences, deductions, and abductions.
Activity II (20 minutes): Activity: Identification of Logical Fallacies
In this activity, students will read a text and identify logical fallacies or invalid reasoning types that the author used. The teacher will provide additional examples of logical fallacies and relevant resources to help students understand the concept.
Activity III (20 minutes): Activity: Analyzing a Text Using Critical Thinking
In this activity, students will analyze a given text using critical thinking skills. The teacher will provide students with a text and questions related to the text that will help them identify the main points and determine whether the author’s arguments are sound.
Activity IV (5 minutes): Closing activity:
In this activity, students will discuss their understanding of the concept of fairness as it relates to argumentation. The teacher will explain that fairness means making sure that all sides of an argument are considered when reaching a conclusion and that support for a conclusion should be based on facts.
Closure: (5 minutes)
The teacher will summarise what has been discussed in the lesson and the key points that students should remember. The teacher will also encourage students to continue to practice their critical thinking skills.
Evaluation:
At the end of the lesson, the teacher will ask students to complete a brief quiz to assess their understanding of the topics discussed in the lesson.
Extension:
Students who are interested in continuing to develop their critical thinking skills can complete an online activity related to logical fallacies or analyze a text of their choosing using their critical thinking skills.
