Introduction: Today we are going to be learning about celebrations and commemorations across the world. This is a really interesting topic, as it shows us how people around the world celebrate the same events, but in lots of different ways.

Lesson Outline:

• Introduction to Celebrations & Commemorations (5 minutes): Introduce the topic and explain to the students what celebrations and commemorations are and why they are important.

• Watch videos & discuss examples of celebrations & commemorations (20 minutes): Provide some videos about celebrations and customs from around the world for the students to watch. After each, discuss with the students the similarities and differences between the different celebrations. You could include YouTube links, such as:

  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12Nt3sjtQGQ
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fceAIKX9mC8

• Group work on researching specific holidays & commemorations (20 minutes): Divide students into small groups and provide them with worksheets to research different holidays and commemorations from around the world. Give each group a different holiday or commemoration to look at, and provide guidance on what information they should be looking for.

• Whole-class discussion of lesson outcomes (10 minutes): Bring the class back together to discuss the main points from their group work.

Questioning: Encourage students to engage in the lesson and ask open-ended questions to draw out the students’ learning. Some examples include:

• What are some of the similarities and differences between the celebrations you have looked at? • What is a commemoration, and why is it important? • Which holiday have you looked at today? • What happened at this event, and how is it celebrated?

Assessment: Assess the students’ understanding of the lesson by monitoring their participation in the activities and discussion. Also, use the worksheets to assess their research and knowledge of the holidays and commemorations.

Differentiation: To ensure a successful learning experience for all students, provide a variety of activities to cater for different learning needs and abilities. For example, give more able students additional research tasks and questions to answer or provide extension activities. To support students with lower abilities, provide pictures and diagrams or simpler questions.

Plenary: Bring the lesson to a close with a recap activity or discussion questions for the students. This will provide an opportunity for them to review the material they have discussed and consolidate their learning. Some examples include:

• Can you name a few different holidays or commemorations from around the world? • What did you learn about celebrations and customs around the world today? • What similarities did you notice between some of the celebrations?
