Lesson Plan: Reception Maths

Objective: Students will develop their understanding of numbers, counting, calculating, and shape, space, and measures.

Materials: - Number cards (1-9) - Counting objects (e.g. counters, blocks, toys) - Number line - Objects for sharing (e.g. snacks, small toys) - Shape cards (2D and 3D shapes) - Pattern cards - Sand-timer - Clock or watch

Warm-up (5 minutes): - Begin the lesson by reviewing the numbers 1-9. Show the number cards and have students identify each number. - Count aloud as a class from 1 to 10 and beyond, using cardinal numbers. Encourage students to join in and count along.

Introduction (10 minutes): - Introduce the concept of estimating a number of objects. Show a group of objects and ask students to estimate how many there are. Write their estimates on the board. - Count the objects together as a class to check the actual number. Discuss whether the estimates were close or not.

Activity 1: Counting and Cardinal Numbers (15 minutes): - Give each student a set of counting objects. - Instruct students to count aloud in ones, twos, fives, and tens using their objects. Encourage them to use the number line as a visual aid. - Have students take turns counting out a specific number of objects from a larger group. For example, “Count out 3 blocks from this pile.”

Activity 2: Ordinal Numbers (15 minutes): - Show students a group of objects and ask them to position each item according to its place in the group using ordinal numbers (e.g. first, second, third, etc.). - Provide opportunities for students to practice ordering objects using ordinal numbers. For example, have them line up in order or arrange objects in a specific sequence.

Activity 3: Calculating (15 minutes): - Use the number line to demonstrate counting on and back. Start at a specific number and count forward and backward. - Show students a number and ask them to find one more or one less than that number. Use the number line to support their understanding.

Activity 4: Shape, Space, and Measures (20 minutes): - Show students different quantities of objects and ask them to compare and use words such as ‘greater’, ‘smaller’, ‘heavier’, or ‘lighter’ to describe them. - Introduce 2D and 3D shapes using shape cards. Have students name and describe each shape. - Provide pattern cards and ask students to create their own simple patterns using objects or drawings. - Discuss the position of objects using everyday words (e.g. above, below, beside). - Have students sort familiar objects based on their differences and similarities. - Allow students to build patterns and models using various materials. - Provide objects of different lengths or weights and ask students to put them in order.

Conclusion (5 minutes): - Review the concepts covered in the lesson, including numbers, counting, calculating, and shape, space, and measures. - Ask students to share one thing they learned or enjoyed during the lesson.

Extension Activity: - Introduce the concept of time by putting familiar events in sequence. Use a sand-timer to measure short periods of time. - Show students a clock or watch and discuss how it measures time. Practice telling time to the hour or half-hour using a classroom clock.
