Title: Analyzing Raw Data in the Data Handling Unit

Grade Level: 4th Grade

Duration: 3-4 class periods (45 minutes each)

Objective: Students will be able to analyze and interpret raw data using the 5E model, specifically focusing on the data handling unit.

Materials: - Chart paper or whiteboard - Markers or whiteboard markers - Raw data sets (e.g., survey results, temperature records, sports scores, etc.) - Graph paper or graphing software - Calculators (optional)

Engage (10 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by asking students if they know what raw data is and how it can be useful. 2. Show them a raw data set (e.g., survey results on favorite ice cream flavors) and ask them to discuss in pairs or small groups what they notice about the data. 3. Facilitate a class discussion, asking students to share their observations and thoughts on how the data can be organized and analyzed.

Explore (15 minutes): 1. Provide each student or group with a different raw data set (e.g., temperature records for a week). 2. Instruct students to examine the data and identify any patterns or trends they notice. 3. Encourage students to discuss their findings with their peers and make predictions based on the data.

Explain (15 minutes): 1. Gather students back together and ask them to share their observations and predictions. 2. Introduce the concept of organizing raw data into tables or graphs to make it easier to analyze. 3. Demonstrate how to create a table or graph using one of the raw data sets from the Explore phase. 4. Discuss the importance of labeling axes, using appropriate scales, and choosing the right type of graph for different types of data.

Elaborate (30 minutes): 1. Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a different raw data set. 2. Instruct students to create a table or graph to represent the data. 3. Encourage students to analyze the data further by calculating averages, finding the highest/lowest values, or identifying any outliers. 4. Allow students to present their findings to the class, explaining their analysis and any conclusions they draw from the data.

Evaluate (15 minutes): 1. Distribute a different raw data set to each student or group. 2. Instruct students to create a table or graph to represent the data independently. 3. Circulate the classroom to assess students’ understanding and provide guidance as needed. 4. Collect and review the students’ tables or graphs to evaluate their ability to analyze and interpret raw data accurately.

Extension Activity (optional): 1. Provide students with a new raw data set and ask them to create a survey or questionnaire to collect additional data. 2. Instruct students to analyze the new data and compare it with the previous data sets. 3. Encourage students to draw conclusions and make predictions based on the combined data.

Note: This lesson plan can be modified to suit different grade levels by adjusting the complexity of the raw data sets and the level of analysis required.
