Introduction
Welcome everyone to our lesson on 3D shapes! We will learn to recognise 3D shapes, their properties and how to draw them.
Lesson Outline
-
Introduction: (10 mins) - Introduce the concept of 3D shapes and their properties - Watch this video, “Introduction to 3D Shapes” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOE3qycwBdo)
-
Identifying and Drawing 3D Shapes: (20 mins) - Have the students draw simple 3D shapes by looking at examples - Give out a 3D shape task worksheet (https://www.activityvillage.co.uk/3d-net-shapes-worksheet) - Ask the students to identify the names of each 3D shape
-
Hands-on Activity: (20 mins) - Divide the class into groups - Provide each group with different materials to construct each 3D shape (e.g. craft sticks, card and paper) - Ask the students to construct 3D shapes based on the examples given
Questioning
- Throughout the lesson, ask the students questions to check their understanding of the topic:
- What is a 3D shape?
- What are the properties of a 3D shape?
- How many faces, edges and vertices does a cube have?
- What is the difference between a cube and a cuboid?
Assessment
- Students will work individually to complete a worksheet to identify different 3D shapes
- Formative assessment throughout the lesson to check understanding
- Summative assessment in the form of a quiz to test knowledge and understanding
Differentiation
- Provide students with different worksheets depending on ability level
- Offer support throughout the activity
Plenary
- Recap the topics covered during the lesson
- Give the students the chance to share their 3D shape constructions
- Ask the students to summarise the properties of a 3D shape
- Complete a quick quiz to check understanding
