Grade Level: 4th-6th grade
Objective: - Students will be able to describe the characteristics of a healthy school and community environment. - Students will understand the positive effects of living in a healthy school and community.
Materials: - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Handouts with a checklist of healthy school and community characteristics - Pictures or illustrations depicting a healthy school and community environment
Procedure:
- Introduction (5 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by asking students what they think makes a school and community healthy.
- Write their responses on the whiteboard or chart paper.
- Discussion (10 minutes):
- Explain to students that a healthy school and community environment is one that promotes physical, mental, and social well-being.
- Discuss the following characteristics of a healthy school and community: a) Clean and safe environment b) Access to nutritious food and clean water c) Regular physical activity opportunities d) Supportive relationships and positive social interactions e) Opportunities for learning and personal growth f) Respect for diversity and inclusion g) Access to healthcare and mental health services
- Activity: Healthy School and Community Checklist (15 minutes):
- Distribute the handouts with a checklist of healthy school and community characteristics.
- In pairs or small groups, have students discuss and check off the characteristics they think their school and community possess.
- Afterward, have a class discussion to share their findings and compare their checklists.
- Effects of Living in a Healthy School and Community (15 minutes):
