Lesson Plan: Photosynthesis
Objective: Students will identify the functions of photosynthesis and explain the phases of this process.
Time: 60 minutes
Materials Needed: - Pictures of the process of photosynthesis - Small plants - Green material (ex. construction paper, green paint) - Science journals
Introduction (10 minutes): - Have the students research what photosynthesis is and explain to the class. - Show pictures that depict the process with a focus on the reactants and products. - Discuss the importance of photosynthesis in the natural environment.
Activity (30 minutes): - Have students work in pairs and research the phases of photosynthesis. - Give each group a small plant and green materials. - Ask them to construct a model of a leaf that depicts the process of photosynthesis. - Have them draw the model in their science journal, including the reactants and products.
Brain Break (5 minutes): - Play a song related to photosynthesis and ask the students to participate in a fun dance that’s related to the lesson.
Application (15 minutes): - Have the students work in groups of 3-4 to create a poster that summarizes the process of photosynthesis. - Provide them with markers and construction paper to create their poster. - Ask each group to share their posters and explain their process.
Conclusion (5 minutes): - Ask for students to volunteer to explain the main functions of photosynthesis. - Ask them to offer examples of how photosynthesis affects their daily lives. - Summarize the lesson by recapping the main points discussed.
Assessment: - Ask the students to draw a diagram in their science journal that depicts the phases of photosynthesis. - Have each student write a short essay on what they have learned about photosynthesis.
Follow-up: - Invite a guest speaker to talk to the class about careers related to photosynthesis and ways to help the environment.
