Grade 3 Lesson Plan on Syllables
Objective: Students will be able to identify and count syllables in words.
Materials: - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Word cards with various words (1-3 syllables) - Scissors - Glue - Construction paper - Pencils - Syllable worksheet (downloaded or printed)
Lesson 1: Introduction to Syllables
- Warm-up (5 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by clapping out the syllables in your name and asking students to do the same with their names.
- Ask students if they know what a syllable is and allow a few responses.
- Introduction (10 minutes):
- Write the word “syllable” on the board and explain that a syllable is a part of a word that contains one vowel sound.
- Demonstrate how to clap out the syllables in a few simple words, such as “cat” (1 syllable) and “elephant” (3 syllables).
- Ask students to clap out the syllables in a few more words as a class.
- Guided Practice (15 minutes):
- Distribute word cards with various words to each student.
- Instruct students to cut out the word cards and sort them into piles based on the number of syllables.
- After sorting, have students glue the word cards onto construction paper, labeling each pile with the corresponding number of syllables.
- Independent Practice (10 minutes):
- Hand out a syllable worksheet to each student.
- Instruct students to read each word and write the number of syllables next to it.
- Collect the worksheets for assessment.
Lesson 2: Syllable Counting Game
- Warm-up (5 minutes):
- Review the concept of syllables by clapping out the syllables in a few words as a class.
- Introduction (10 minutes):
- Explain that today, students will play a game to practice counting syllables.
- Divide the class into small groups and distribute a set of word cards to each group.
- Guided Practice (15 minutes):
- Instruct each group to take turns drawing a word card and counting the syllables in the word.
- If a student counts the syllables correctly, they keep the card. If not, it goes back into the pile.
- The student with the most cards at the end of the game wins.
