Procedure:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes):
    • Begin the lesson by explaining the concept of root words. Define root words as the basic building blocks of words that carry the main meaning.
    • Give examples of root words such as “bio” (meaning life), “tele” (meaning far), and “graph” (meaning write).
    • Discuss how understanding root words can help students decipher the meanings of unfamiliar words.
  2. Root Word Exploration (20 minutes):
    • Introduce ten common root words to the students, one at a time. Write each root word on the whiteboard or chart paper.
    • Provide the definition and examples of words that contain the root word.
    • Encourage students to brainstorm other words they know that contain the root word.
    • Repeat this process for each of the ten root words.
  3. Word-Building Activity (15 minutes):
    • Distribute the worksheets with word-building exercises to each student.
    • Instruct students to use the given root words to create new words by adding prefixes or suffixes.
    • Encourage students to write the definitions of the new words they create.
    • Circulate the classroom to provide assistance and monitor progress.
  4. Group Discussion (10 minutes):
    • Bring the class back together and have students share the new words they created.
    • Discuss the meanings of the new words and how they relate to the root words.
    • Encourage students to explain the process they used to create the new words.
  5. Review and Reinforcement (10 minutes):
    • Review the ten root words covered in the lesson.
    • Ask students to provide examples of words they encountered outside of the lesson that contain these root words.
