Title: Writing a Paragraph

Grade Level: 4th-6th

Objective: Students will be able to write a well-structured paragraph with a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.

Materials: - Whiteboard and markers - Handout with paragraph structure - Writing prompts - Pencils and paper

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin by asking students what they know about paragraphs. 2. Write their responses on the board. 3. Explain that a paragraph is a group of sentences that focus on one main idea. 4. Show them the handout with the paragraph structure and explain each part.

Body (30 minutes): 1. Give students a writing prompt and ask them to brainstorm ideas for their paragraph. 2. Have them write a topic sentence that clearly states the main idea of their paragraph. 3. Ask them to write supporting details that explain or give examples of their main idea. 4. Remind them to use transition words to connect their ideas. 5. Have them write a concluding sentence that summarizes their paragraph. 6. Walk around the room and provide feedback and assistance as needed.

Conclusion (10 minutes): 1. Ask students to share their paragraphs with the class. 2. Discuss what makes a good paragraph and what they learned from the lesson. 3. Encourage them to use the paragraph structure and techniques in their future writing.

Assessment: Assess students’ paragraphs based on the following criteria: - Clear topic sentence - Supporting details that explain or give examples of the main idea - Use of transition words - Concluding sentence that summarizes the paragraph

Extension: Challenge students to write multiple paragraphs on a given topic, using the same paragraph structure and techniques.
