Title: Solving Multi-Step Word Problems using Multiplication and Division

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Objective: Students will be able to solve multi-step word problems using multiplication and division.

Materials: - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers or chalk - Worksheets (one for each group) - Pencils - Video (link provided below)

Grouping: Divide the class into five groups based on their ability levels. Each group should consist of 4-5 students.

Lesson Plan:

Introduction (5 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by engaging students in a brief discussion about word problems and their importance in real-life situations. 2. Explain that today, they will learn how to solve multi-step word problems using multiplication and division.

Instruction (15 minutes): 1. Display a word problem on the whiteboard or chart paper. Example: “Sarah has 12 apples. She wants to share them equally among her 3 friends. How many apples will each friend get?” 2. Read the problem aloud and ask students to identify the important information. 3. Model the process of solving the problem step-by-step, using multiplication and division. - Step 1: Multiply 12 (apples) by 3 (friends) to find the total number of apples needed. - Step 2: Divide the total number of apples by 3 to find the number of apples each friend will get. 4. Repeat the process with a few more examples, gradually increasing the complexity of the problems.

Group Work (20 minutes): 1. Distribute the worksheets to each group, ensuring that the difficulty level matches their abilities. 2. Instruct each group to work together to solve the word problems on their worksheet using the strategies discussed. 3. Circulate among the groups, providing support and guidance as needed. 4. Encourage students to discuss their thinking and explain their solutions to their group members.

Closure (5 minutes): 1. Bring the class back together and ask each group to share one problem they solved and how they arrived at the solution. 2. Summarize the key strategies and steps for solving multi-step word problems using multiplication and division. 3. Emphasize the importance of checking their answers and explaining their reasoning.
