Lesson Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Define the concept of spirituality 2. Recognize examples of symbols associated with spirituality 3. Describe how different spiritual symbols can affect our view of spirituality

Materials Needed: - Whiteboard/markers - Discussion cards - Printout of spiritual symbols (optional)

Lesson Plan:

I. Introduction (5 minutes) A. Introduction of the topic 1. Ask students what comes to mind when they hear the word “spirituality” 2. Explain the concept of spirituality and why it is an important part of our lives

B. Explain why understanding spirituality is important 1. Ask students to think about a time when they felt their spirituality change 2. Connect their examples to a discussion about the importance of understanding spirituality

II. Symbols in Spirituality (15 minutes) A. Ask students what comes to mind when they hear the word “symbol” 1. Give an example of a symbol, such as a religious cross, and ask students to brainstorm symbols they may be aware of 2. Discuss how symbols can be found in many places, including clothing and tattoos

B. Look at some of the spiritual symbols and discuss how they can affect our view of spirituality 1. Divide students into groups and pass out discussion cards with symbols associated with spirituality 2. Allow students to discuss and analyze the symbols they were given, focusing on how the symbols can affect the way we view spirituality 3. Once groups have finished discussing the cards, open up a class discussion on the analysis of the symbols

III. Wrap-Up (5 minutes) A. Ask students to reflect on what they have learned 1. Remind students of the lesson objectives 2. Ask them what specific spiritual symbols and concepts that they have learned

B. Review any terms or ideas that need more explanation

C. Closing 1. Ask students to reflect on what today’s lesson has taught them 2. Offer any final advice or words of encouragement 3. Collect any printed materials from the lesson.
