Objective: Students will be able to understand the process of transcription and translation in protein synthesis

Materials: PowerPoint or chart listing the basic steps of protein synthesis along with diagrams

Procedure: 1. Begin by introducing the topic of proteins to the students - explain that proteins are molecules made up of smaller building blocks called amino acids, and that proteins are essential for many body functions.

  1. Ask the students for examples of proteins. (Examples: collagen, enzymes, antibodies, hormones)

  2. Introduce the concept of protein synthesis and explain that it is the process by which proteins are created.

  3. Explain that there are two steps to protein synthesis: transcription and translation.

  4. Show the PowerPoint or charts that detail the steps of transcription and translation.

  5. Have the students take notes while you go over each step.

  6. Ask the students questions to help them better understand the steps of transcription and translation.

  7. Have the students create a diagram summarizing the steps of protein synthesis.

  8. Provide feedback as necessary to help students understand the material.

  9. Ask the students to summarize what they’ve learned about protein synthesis.

  10. Summarize the lesson and remind students of the main points.
