Materials: - Chart paper - Markers - SEL posters or handouts - Video on SEL (optional)
Procedure:
-
Introduction (5 minutes) - Begin by asking students if they have ever heard of social emotional learning (SEL). Allow for a brief discussion. - Explain that SEL is the process of developing the skills and knowledge necessary to manage emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions. - Tell students that today, they will be learning about the five core competencies of SEL.
-
Core Competencies (20 minutes) - Divide students into small groups and give each group a piece of chart paper and markers. - Assign each group one of the five core competencies of SEL: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. - Instruct students to create a poster that defines their assigned competency and provides examples of how it can be demonstrated in real-life situations. - After 10-15 minutes, have each group present their poster to the class.
-
SEL Posters (10 minutes) - Show students posters or handouts that provide an overview of the five core competencies of SEL. - Discuss each competency briefly and ask students to share any additional examples they can think of.
-
Conclusion (5 minutes) - Ask students to reflect on what they have learned about SEL and the five core competencies. - Encourage students to think about how they can apply these skills in their own lives.
Optional: Show a video on SEL to reinforce the concepts covered in the lesson.
Assessment: - Observe students during group work and presentations to ensure they understand the core competencies of SEL. - Ask students to write a short reflection on what they learned about SEL and how they can apply it in their own lives.
