Introduction (5 minutes)

• Explain to the students that today’s lesson will be about estimation and rounding. • Give a few examples of situations where estimation and rounding can be used, such as “If your parents asked you how much money they owe you for bringing groceries, how would you estimate it quickly?” • Show the students a few pictures and have them estimate how many objects are in the pictures before actually counting to check their estimations.

Lesson Outline (45 minutes)

• Explain to the students the difference between estimation and rounding. Get them to explain it back to you. • Let them know that when you are estimating, you are making an educated guess about a number that is close to the exact answer. • Show them an example of rounding, and have them practice rounding different numbers. • Show them a video on estimation and rounding, such as this one from SplashLearn: https://www.splashlearn.com/maths-videos/estimation-and-rounding • Provide a worksheet on estimation and rounding with practice problems. Questions • What is the difference between estimation and rounding? • How do you estimate a number quickly? • How do you round a number?

Assessment • Assess the students on their understanding of estimation and rounding by giving them a quiz or worksheet with practice questions.

Differentiation • Provide students with different levels of difficulty on worksheets and activities to cater to the needs of different students.

Plenary (5 minutes)

• Discuss the importance of estimation and rounding, and how it can be used in everyday life. • Recap the different tasks the students have done today, and give them examples of how estimation and rounding could be used in real life.
