Lesson Plan: Non-Fiction Stories for Year 2

Objective: Students will be able to identify and understand the features of non-fiction stories.

Materials: - Non-fiction books (e.g. National Geographic Kids, Eyewitness Books) - Chart paper and markers - Worksheets for exercise

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin by asking students if they know what non-fiction means. Explain that non-fiction is a type of book that is based on facts and real events. 2. Show students examples of non-fiction books and ask them to identify the features that make them different from fiction books (e.g. real photographs, information boxes, glossary). 3. Write down the features on chart paper and discuss them with the class.

Body (30 minutes): 1. Read a non-fiction book aloud to the class, stopping periodically to point out the features of non-fiction (e.g. captions, headings, index). 2. Have students work in pairs to look through non-fiction books and identify the features they learned about. 3. As a class, discuss the different types of non-fiction books (e.g. biographies, informational texts, reference books). 4. Have students choose a non-fiction book to read independently and complete a worksheet that asks them to identify the features of non-fiction in their book.

Conclusion (10 minutes): 1. Review the features of non-fiction and ask students to share what they learned. 2. Have students share their worksheets with the class and discuss the different types of non-fiction books they read. 3. Encourage students to continue reading non-fiction books and to look for the features they learned about.
