Lesson Plan: Developing Respect for Teachers and Others

Grade Level: 4th Grade Subject: Social Emotional Learning

Objective: - Students will understand the importance of showing respect towards their teachers and others. - Students will learn specific behaviors and actions that demonstrate respect. - Students will reflect on their own behavior and identify areas for improvement.

Materials: - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Laptop or computer with internet access - Projector or smartboard - Videos: 1. “Respecting Others” by BrainPOP Jr. (https://jr.brainpop.com/socialstudies/behavior/respectingothers/) 2. “Respecting Teachers” by ClassDojo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XGAmPRxV48)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes): a. Begin the lesson by asking students what they think respect means. Write their responses on the whiteboard or chart paper. b. Discuss their answers and provide a definition of respect: “Respect means treating others with kindness, consideration, and showing good manners.” c. Explain that today’s lesson will focus on developing respect for their teachers and others.

  2. Video: “Respecting Others” by BrainPOP Jr. (10 minutes): a. Show the video “Respecting Others” by BrainPOP Jr. using a projector or smartboard. b. After watching the video, engage students in a brief discussion:
    • What are some examples of respectful behavior shown in the video?
    • Why is it important to show respect to others?
    • How does it feel when someone shows you respect?
  3. Classroom Discussion (10 minutes): a. Ask students to share examples of respectful behaviors they can demonstrate towards their teachers and classmates. b. Write their responses on the whiteboard or chart paper. c. Discuss each behavior and why it is important for creating a positive learning environment.

  4. Video: “Respecting Teachers” by ClassDojo (10 minutes): a. Show the video “Respecting Teachers” by ClassDojo using a projector or smartboard. b. After watching the video, facilitate a class discussion:
    • What are some specific ways we can show respect to our teachers?
    • How can showing respect to our teachers improve our learning experience?
    • How do you think teachers feel when students show them respect?
  5. Reflection Activity (15 minutes): a. Distribute reflection sheets to each student. b. Ask students to reflect on their own behavior and identify areas where they can improve in showing respect towards their teachers and others. c. Encourage students to set personal goals for themselves to work on improving their respectful behavior. d. Allow students to share their reflections and goals with a partner or in small groups.

  6. Conclusion (5 minutes): a. Summarize the main points discussed during the lesson. b. Emphasize the importance of respect in creating a positive and supportive learning environment. c. Encourage students to practice respectful behavior both inside and outside the classroom.

Extension Activity: - Ask students to create posters or drawings depicting respectful behaviors towards teachers and others. - Role-play scenarios where students demonstrate respectful behavior in different situations. - Encourage students to interview their teachers or other school staff members about their experiences with respect and share their findings with the class.
