Objective: To introduce S1 pupils to various possession games.

Materials: Cones to mark out an area, a variety of balls.

Warm-Up: Have pupils jog around the playing area, throwing, catching and dribbling a ball.

Instructions:

  1. Divide the class into two teams.

  2. Set up an area using four cones to mark out a square, this should be wide enough for the pupils to move around.

  3. Explain the rules, pupils must keep possession of the ball for as long as possible by passing or dribbling to teammates (not kicking or throwing).

  4. The team who keeps the ball the longest wins.

  5. Play each game for a set period of time (5-10 minutes).

  6. At the end of the game, switch up the teams and repeat.

  7. After the game is over, provide feedback and ask each team for their thoughts on how they played.

  8. If there is still time, add other variants to the game, such as giving each player a limit of two touches.

  9. Once all the variants have been explored, allow the pupils to pick and choose which they would like to use during game-play.

  10. Wrap up the lesson by asking the class to reflect on what they have learnt.

By the end of the lesson, pupils will have been introduced to a variety of possession games and will have developed their passing, dribbling and ball control skills.
