Objective: To introduce S1 pupils to various possession games.
Materials: Cones to mark out an area, a variety of balls.
Warm-Up: Have pupils jog around the playing area, throwing, catching and dribbling a ball.
Instructions:
-
Divide the class into two teams.
-
Set up an area using four cones to mark out a square, this should be wide enough for the pupils to move around.
-
Explain the rules, pupils must keep possession of the ball for as long as possible by passing or dribbling to teammates (not kicking or throwing).
-
The team who keeps the ball the longest wins.
-
Play each game for a set period of time (5-10 minutes).
-
At the end of the game, switch up the teams and repeat.
-
After the game is over, provide feedback and ask each team for their thoughts on how they played.
-
If there is still time, add other variants to the game, such as giving each player a limit of two touches.
-
Once all the variants have been explored, allow the pupils to pick and choose which they would like to use during game-play.
-
Wrap up the lesson by asking the class to reflect on what they have learnt.
By the end of the lesson, pupils will have been introduced to a variety of possession games and will have developed their passing, dribbling and ball control skills.
