Objective: Students will be able to identify positive and negative aspects of digital citizenship, and understand the importance of using technology responsibly.
Materials Needed: -Computers or tablets -PowerPoint
Lesson Outline:
I. Introduction (10 minutes) A. Discuss with the students about digital technology and its benefits (i.e., access to people, places, and things, convenience of communication, and opportunities to expand knowledge).
B. Have students brainstorm positives and negatives associated with digital technology and record on a chart on the board.
C. Introduction to digital citizenship and its importance.
II. Exploring Digital Citizenship (30 minutes) A. Challenge the students to use the computers/tablets to investigate the Responsible Use Policy (RUP).
B. Review the rules/guidelines outlined in the RUP and ask student to provide examples (5 minutes)
C. Show the students a PowerPoint presentation exploring digital citizenship (20 minutes)
III. Conclusion (5 minutes) A. Summarize the key points of digital citizenship.
B. Explain the importance of understanding and following the RUP for their own safety and the safety of others.
C. Ask the students to share one of the key points of the lesson and how it can be applied to their everyday lives.
