Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and recognize 5 high frequency words.

Materials Needed: whiteboard, whiteboard markers, flashcards, writing paper

Steps:

  1. Begin lesson by telling students that today they will be learning about five high-frequency words. Explain that high-frequency words are words that we use very often when we are talking or writing, and they are important to recognize.

  2. Write the five high-frequency words on the whiteboard so that they can be seen easily. Examples of five high-frequency words could include ‘the’, ‘I’, ‘of’, ‘said’, and ‘was’.

  3. Have students look at the words on the whiteboard and read them aloud. Then, explain the meanings of each word and give examples of how they could be used in a sentence.

  4. Pass out the flashcards to the students. On each card, there will be one of the five high-frequency words written in bold.

  5. Have each student pick one card, read the word aloud, and then explain what it means and give an example of how it could be used in a sentence.

  6. After all students have had a chance to explain their word, have them practice writing the five high-frequency words on the writing paper.

  7. Once all students have finished writing the words, you could have them play a game such as ‘Hangman’ using high-frequency words.

  8. Wrap up the lesson by having the students read the five words aloud one more time.

Assessment: Have each student pick one card and explain the word, example in a sentence and answer a few questions about the words.

Conclusion: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and recognize five high frequency words. This is an important skill that they will be able to use in their reading and writing activities.
