Title: Exploring the “ch,” “tch,” and “ck” Spelling Generalizations

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes): a. Begin the lesson by asking students if they have noticed any patterns in words that end with “ch,” “tch,” or “ck.” b. Write the words “ch,” “tch,” and “ck” on the whiteboard or chart paper. c. Discuss the generalizations:
    • “ch” is usually used at the end of a word after a short vowel sound (e.g., lunch, bench).
    • “tch” is used after a short vowel sound, usually at the end of a one-syllable word (e.g., match, catch).
    • “ck” is used after a short vowel sound, usually at the end of a one-syllable word (e.g., back, pick).
  2. Word Sort Activity (15 minutes): a. Distribute index cards with words containing “ch,” “tch,” and “ck” to each student. b. Instruct students to sort the words into three categories: “ch,” “tch,” and “ck.” c. After sorting, have students share their categories and explain their reasoning.

  3. Practice Worksheets (20 minutes): a. Hand out the practice worksheets to each student (see attached). b. Instruct students to complete the worksheets independently. c. Circulate the classroom to provide assistance and answer any questions.

  4. Online Activities (15 minutes): a. Direct students to online activities to reinforce the spelling generalizations:
    • “Spelling City” (www.spellingcity.com): Students can play interactive games related to “ch,” “tch,” and “ck” words.
    • “ABCya” (www.abcya.com): Students can access spelling games and activities related to the spelling generalizations. b. Monitor students’ progress and provide guidance as needed.
  5. Conclusion (5 minutes): a. Review the “ch,” “tch,” and “ck” spelling generalizations with the class. b. Ask students to share any new words they discovered during the activities. c. Encourage students to practice using these spelling generalizations in their writing.
