Objective: To learn and practice dribbling skills and drills
Materials: Basketballs, cones, goal basket
Warm-up: (5 minutes)
• Have the students line up in a single-file line and march around the gym • Ask the students to count aloud until they reach 50 • Have the students jog four laps around the gym
Skill Development (20 minutes)
• Explain to the students what the purpose of dribbling is • Demonstrate how to dribble a basketball and discuss the proper technique • Demonstrate the proper way to use the fingertips when dribbling • Have the students practice dribbling with both hands up and down and around the court • Have the students practice different dribbling drills such as jogging while dribbling, crossover dribble, and behind the back dribble • Have the students practice dribbling with one hand and then switch hands each time they reach a cone • Demonstrate the proper way to control the ball and keep the head up when dribbling
Game Play (15 minutes)
• Divide the students into teams of four • Have the teams start at one side of the court • The object of the game is to dribble the ball to the goal and score • The team that scores the most goals wins • The team must use proper dribbling techniques • The teams can substitute players during the game.
Cool-down (5 minutes)
• Have the students jog around the court once more • Have the students stretch and hold each stretch for 10-15 seconds • Instruct the students to cool down and relax • Remind the students of the importance of stretching and cooling down
Review (5 minutes)
• Ask the students to describe the dribbling techniques they used • Ask the students what they enjoyed about the game • Ask the students what they learned about dribbling • Ask the students what other drills they can use for dribbling • Ask the students to provide feedback on the experience • Remind the students to always practice good sportsmanship
