LESSON OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, 9th grade students will be able to:
-
Explain why the molecular level structure is important in the functioning of designed materials.
-
Analyze the contribution of various molecules to the functionality and structure of designed materials.
-
Communicate scientific and technical information about the molecular level structure and functioning of designed materials in written or verbal form.
MATERIALS/RESOURCES
• Student notes handout • Textbook • Computer with Internet access • Scientific models of molecules
ACTIVITY 1: INTRODUCTION (15 MINUTES)
Teacher explains to the students that the functioning of designed materials, such as plastics, fabrics, etc., depend on the arrangement of the molecules at the molecular level. The students should take notes as the teacher provides additional information about why the molecular level structure is important.
ACTIVITY 2: EXPLORATION (20 MINUTES)
The students should use their textbook and computer access to explore the molecular level structure of different materials. The students should summarize the information they find in their own words and discuss their findings in groups. They should analyze the contribution of different molecules to the structure and functioning of designed materials.
ACTIVITY 3: PRACTICE (15 MINUTES)
The teacher should provide the students with scientific models of molecules and assign each group of students with a different material. The students should discuss how the molecular level structure and functioning of their assigned material contributes to its overall design and function.
ACTIVITY 4: CHALLENGE (15 MINUTES)
The students should present their findings to the class. The teacher should encourage them to explain why the molecular level structure is important in the functioning of designed materials. They should provide evidence and technical information to support their claims.
END OF LESSON
The teacher can wrap up the lesson by having students answer a few review questions about why the molecular level structure is important in the functioning of designed materials. This activity can serve as a formative assessment to evaluate their understanding of the concepts.
