Objective: Students will be able to make inference and predictions with evidence from the text, Beowulf.

Set Up: Gather students into cooperative learning groups. Assign each group a particular part to read from Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo. Have the students read and record any evidence they think will help them create predictions or inferences.

Activity: Have each group share what evidence they found, and have each group come up with a prediction based on their evidence. Have the class discuss the evidence they found and come up with predictions as a whole. Some questions to ask yourself when creating predictions include:

•What do we think will happen next? •Do we think there is a lesson to be learned here? •What could the characters’ decision lead to? •What might happen if the characters make a different decision?

Conclusion: Have the students share the predictions or inferences they made based on the evidence. Discuss how accurate their predictions were. Talk about why some predictions may have been more accurate than others. Lastly, have each student discuss what they learned and their reflections on the activity.
