Title: “Healthy Plate Challenge”

Objective: The objective of this game is to help A2 level learners understand the concept of a healthy plate and develop their reading skills while having fun.

Materials: - Printed copies of a short text about a healthy plate (see example below) - A set of flashcards with different food items (e.g., fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains) - A large poster or whiteboard to draw a plate divided into sections

Instructions: 1. Introduction (5 minutes): - Begin by introducing the topic of a healthy plate and its importance in maintaining a balanced diet. - Show the flashcards of different food items and ask the learners to name them.

  1. Reading Activity (10 minutes):
    • Distribute the printed copies of the short text about a healthy plate to each learner.
    • Ask the learners to read the text silently and underline any unfamiliar words.
    • After reading, encourage them to discuss the main ideas and any new vocabulary they encountered.

Example Text: “A healthy plate consists of different food groups that provide essential nutrients for our bodies. It is divided into four sections: fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains. Fruits and vegetables should cover half of the plate, as they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Proteins, such as lean meat, fish, or beans, should fill one-quarter of the plate to help build and repair body tissues. The remaining quarter should be filled with whole grains, like brown rice or whole wheat bread, which provide energy and fiber. Remember, a healthy plate is a key to a healthy lifestyle!”

  1. Game Instructions (5 minutes):
    • Explain that the learners will now play a game to reinforce their understanding of a healthy plate.
    • Draw a large plate divided into four sections on the poster or whiteboard.
    • Shuffle the flashcards and place them face down in a pile.
  2. Game Play (15 minutes):
    • Divide the learners into small groups or pairs.
    • Each group takes turns drawing a flashcard from the pile.
    • The learner must then place the flashcard in the correct section of the plate on the poster or whiteboard.
    • If the learner places the flashcard correctly, they earn a point for their team.
    • If the learner places the flashcard incorrectly, the group can discuss and correct the mistake together.
    • Continue playing until all the flashcards have been used or for a set time limit.
  3. Wrap-up Discussion (5 minutes):
    • Engage the learners in a discussion about the game and their understanding of a healthy plate.
    • Ask questions like:
      • What did you learn about a healthy plate from this game?
      • Why is it important to have a balanced diet?
      • How can you apply this knowledge in your daily life?

Note: Adapt the game duration and difficulty level based on the learners’ needs and abilities.
