Research Activity: Exploring Simple Machines Used by Local First Nations, Métis, and Inuit

Objective: The purpose of this research activity is to help grade 3 students understand the significance and purpose of simple machines used by local First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.

Materials Needed: 1. Access to books, articles, or online resources about First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. 2. Paper and pencils for note-taking. 3. Art supplies (optional).

Instructions:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes): a. Begin by discussing with the students the concept of simple machines. Explain that simple machines are tools or devices that make work easier. b. Introduce the idea that different cultures have developed their own unique simple machines to meet their specific needs. c. Explain that the students will be researching and learning about the simple machines used by local First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.

  2. Research (30 minutes): a. Divide the students into small groups or pairs. b. Provide each group with access to books, articles, or online resources about First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. c. Instruct the students to research and find information about the simple machines used by these communities. d. Encourage the students to take notes on the purpose of each simple machine they discover, as well as any interesting facts or stories related to them.

  3. Presentation (20 minutes): a. Bring the students back together as a whole class. b. Ask each group to present their findings to the class. c. During the presentations, have the students share the purpose of each simple machine they researched and any interesting facts or stories they discovered. d. Encourage the students to use visuals or drawings to enhance their presentations.

  4. Reflection and Discussion (10 minutes): a. Lead a class discussion about the significance of the simple machines used by local First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. b. Ask the students to reflect on how these simple machines reflect the unique needs and environment of these communities. c. Discuss how the use of simple machines by these communities demonstrates their resourcefulness and ingenuity.

Extension Activity (Optional): - Have the students create their own simple machines inspired by the ones they researched. They can use art supplies or recycled materials to build and demonstrate their inventions.
