Title: Resume Writing Workshop for Laney College Students
Objective: To equip Laney College students with the necessary skills and knowledge to create effective resumes that highlight their qualifications and increase their chances of securing employment or internships.
Duration: 1 hour
Materials Needed: - Whiteboard or flipchart - Markers - Handouts with resume templates and examples - Computers or laptops with internet access (optional)
Lesson Plan:
I. Introduction (5 minutes) - Welcome the students and introduce yourself as the facilitator. - Explain the importance of having a well-crafted resume in today’s competitive job market. - Share the objectives of the workshop.
II. Understanding the Purpose of a Resume (10 minutes) - Discuss the purpose of a resume: to showcase skills, qualifications, and experiences relevant to the desired job or internship. - Explain the difference between a resume and a CV (curriculum vitae). - Highlight the importance of tailoring the resume to each specific job application.
III. Resume Structure and Sections (15 minutes) - Present the basic structure of a resume, including the following sections: a. Contact Information b. Objective or Summary Statement c. Education d. Work Experience e. Skills f. Achievements or Awards (optional) g. References (optional) - Discuss the purpose and content of each section. - Provide examples and templates to help students visualize the layout and organization.
IV. Writing Effective Resume Content (20 minutes) - Explain the importance of using action verbs and quantifiable achievements to make the resume more impactful. - Discuss the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for describing work experiences or accomplishments. - Encourage students to focus on transferable skills and relevant experiences, even if they lack direct work experience. - Provide tips on how to avoid common resume mistakes, such as spelling errors or excessive length.
V. Tailoring the Resume (10 minutes) - Emphasize the importance of customizing the resume for each job application. - Discuss the significance of researching the company or organization and aligning the resume with their values and requirements. - Provide guidance on how to identify keywords from job descriptions and incorporate them into the resume.
VI. Reviewing and Proofreading (10 minutes) - Explain the significance of reviewing and proofreading the resume for accuracy and clarity. - Share tips on how to effectively proofread, such as reading the resume aloud or asking a friend for feedback. - Encourage students to seek assistance from career services or mentors for additional feedback.
