Criteria:

Thesis (5 points) - Clear and concise thesis statement that presents a focused argument or main idea. - Thesis demonstrates a deep understanding of the text and its central themes. - Thesis is supported by evidence and commentary throughout the analysis.

Evidence (5 points) - Sufficient and relevant textual evidence is provided to support the thesis. - Evidence is accurately quoted or paraphrased, and properly cited. - Evidence demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the text and its nuances.

Commentary on Evidence (5 points) - Commentary provides insightful analysis and interpretation of the evidence. - Commentary explains the significance of the evidence in relation to the thesis. - Commentary demonstrates critical thinking and original thought.

Organization (5 points) - Analysis is well-structured and follows a logical progression of ideas. - Introduction effectively introduces the text, author, and thesis statement. - Body paragraphs are coherent and each focuses on a specific aspect of the analysis. - Conclusion effectively summarizes the main points and reinforces the thesis.

Spelling/Grammar (5 points) - Writing is free from spelling and grammatical errors. - Sentences are clear, concise, and effectively convey the intended meaning. - Proper punctuation and capitalization are used consistently.
Scoring Guide:
- 5 points: Exceptional performance; demonstrates outstanding understanding and execution of the criteria.
- 4 points: Above average performance; demonstrates strong understanding and execution of the criteria.
- 3 points: Average performance; meets the basic expectations of the criteria.
- 2 points: Below average performance; demonstrates some understanding of the criteria but lacks consistency or depth.
- 1 point: Poor performance; demonstrates limited understanding of the criteria and significant deficiencies in execution.
- 0 points: No performance; criteria are not addressed or not evident in the analysis.
