The small sleepy town of Hadleigh had a dark secret that had been hidden away, forgotten by all except the oldest inhabitants.
The quiet town was surrounded by winding, fog-choked roads and the looming presence of The Buried Mountains. It was on one of these very roads, beneath the often gloomy sky, that one fateful night changed everything.
William Johnson, the local baker, had decided to take a shortcut home and not long after, his body was found. What made it so terrifying and mysterious was the state in which he was found. His clothes had been ripped to shreds, his face frozen in a look of terror and his neck broken in an unnatural angle. Whoever had done this was not human, not of this world, and it sent a shockwave throughout the secluded community.
If that was not enough, a week later another body was found in a similar state, this time of the local miller.
The townspeople lived in fear, and could suddenly not trust anyone. Was it someone from the small town that had resorted to a most heinous act, or something far worse? The local sheriff began to investigate, and unearthed a sinister tale that stretched back decades, before the town was even founded.
Apparently, in a nearby cave, there was a creature that had been kept bound and chained by a powerful sorcerer who had recently passed away. He had done it to keep the town safe, and unknown to most it had worked. But as time had passed, the creature had grown more powerful, and with the sorcerer gone, it eventually broke free of its bonds.
The creature roamed the countryside, feeding on unsuspecting passersby, and no one was safe. The locals had no choice but to take matters into their own hands and organize a party to hunt down the creature in its cave and release the town from its malevolent embrace.
It was during the hunt that the sheriff had his Moment of Truth. The creature was caught, chained, and put in a special cell in the Town Hall and never set free again.
The town carried on in peace, but an uneasy feeling still lingers in the air and a feeling of dread loves in the hearts of Hadleigh’s inhabitants. Who knows what else might be out there, waiting in the shadows?
