Materials:

-Large container (such as a bucket or a bowl) -Small cups -Small jars -Water -Food colouring

Instructions:

  1. Fill the large container with water and add food colouring to make the water a different colour.

  2. Ask each student to fill a small cup with water from the large container and add food colouring to make the cup water a different colour.

  3. Ask the students to pour the cup of coloured water into their small jar.

  4. Put the lid on the jar and ask the students to observe the jar.

  5. Ask the students to predict what will happen to the water in the jar and have them write down their predictions.

  6. Put all of the jars outside in the sunshine and ask the students to observe them over the course of a few hours.

  7. Check back in on the jars every hour to observe what has happened to the water.

  8. Ask the students what they noticed happened to the water and discuss why it happened (evaporation).

  9. Have the students re-write their predictions and take note of what actually happened.
