Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to explain the process of evaporation.
Materials: - Shallow dish - Water - Plastic wrap - Flashcards (key terms)
Introduction: (5 minutes) - Ask students to raise their hands if they know what evaporation is. - Explain that evaporation is the process of a liquid turning into a gas, or vapor. - Show the flashcards with key terms related to evaporation: evaporation, liquid, gas, vapor, boiling, and condensation. - Lead a discussion about what the students already know about evaporation.
Experiment: (10 minutes) - Ask for two volunteers to come up to the front to do the experiment - Give out shallow dishes and 3 inches of water to the volunteers. - Ask the volunteers to cover the dish with plastic wrap and to hold up the plastic wrap to show the class - Next, ask the volunteers to watch the dish closely as the water evaporates - Take note of what they observe and ask them to explain what they see - Finally, ask the class what they think is happening and lead a class discussion on the answer.
Conclusion: (5 minutes) - Ask the students to explain the process of evaporation - Lead a class discussion to review what the students have learned - Answer any questions that the students may have - Summarize the key points about evaporation - Explain to the students that evaporation is a natural process and it is important for the water cycle.
