Good morning everyone,
I am a biologist and I would like to share with you some information about the different layers of the rainforest.
The very tall trees form what we call the Emergent layer. This is the highest layer of the rainforest, and is composed of very tall trees that can reach heights of up to 200 feet! This layer gets a lot of strong sunshine and has strong winds.
The next layer is called the Canopy. This is the layer where most of the rainforest action takes place. The canopy is composed of very thick vegetation and receives a lot of direct sunlight. It is home to most of the animals since they can find shelter here.
The next layer is called the Understory. This is a much darker layer since there are more trees blocking the sunlight. It is usually a lot cooler here, and there are many vines and lianas which provide food and shelter for animals.
Finally, we have the Forest Floor. This is the lowest layer of the rainforest and it receives the least amount of light. This layer tends to be dry and there is not much life here.
Now that we have learned about the different layers of the rainforest, can anyone think of some adaptations that the animals may have developed to inhabit these different layers?
Thank you for listening!
