Chapter 1: In chapter 1 of the book “Because of Winn-Dixie” by Kate DiCamillo, we meet a young girl named India Opal Buloni. Opal has just moved to a new town called Naomi, Florida with her father, who is a preacher. Opal feels lonely and misses her old friends and home. One day, while at the supermarket, Opal finds a stray dog causing trouble. She decides to take him home and names him Winn-Dixie after the supermarket. Opal hopes that Winn-Dixie will help her make new friends and bring happiness to her life.
Chapter 2: In chapter 2, Opal and Winn-Dixie start to get to know each other better. Opal learns that Winn-Dixie is afraid of thunderstorms and has a talent for smiling. She also discovers that Winn-Dixie is a good listener and helps her feel less lonely. Opal’s father allows her to keep Winn-Dixie as long as she takes good care of him. Opal and Winn-Dixie go for a walk around the town, and Opal introduces him to some of the people she meets. They meet Miss Franny Block, the librarian, who tells them a story about her great-grandfather. Opal also meets a boy named Stevie Dewberry, who tells her about a local pet store. Opal is excited to have Winn-Dixie as her new friend and hopes that he will help her find more friends in Naomi, Florida.
