Chapter 1 of the book Wonder introduces us to the main character, August Pullman, who is about to start fifth grade. August, or Auggie as he is often called, is not an ordinary boy. He was born with a facial deformity that has made him look different from other kids. Auggie has been homeschooled until now, so going to a real school is a big change for him.

Auggie is nervous about starting school because he knows that people will stare at him and treat him differently. He has always been used to people’s reactions, but he hopes that things will be different in this new school. His parents, Isabel and Nate, are also worried about how Auggie will be treated by his classmates.

On the first day of school, Auggie meets the principal, Mr. Tushman, who is kind and understanding. Mr. Tushman introduces Auggie to three students who will be his tour guides for the day: Julian, Charlotte, and Jack. Julian seems nice at first, but Auggie quickly realizes that he is only pretending to be friendly. Charlotte is kind and tries to make Auggie feel comfortable, while Jack is a bit nervous but also friendly.

Throughout the day, Auggie faces many challenges. Some kids stare at him, others whisper behind his back, and a few even make mean comments. However, Auggie also meets a few kids who are genuinely kind and accepting. He starts to feel hopeful that maybe he can make friends and have a normal school experience.

Chapter 1 of Wonder shows us the struggles Auggie faces as he enters a new school and highlights the importance of kindness and acceptance. It teaches us that appearances should not define how we treat others and that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and understanding.
