Chapter 1 of the book “Count of Monte Cristo” introduces us to the main character, Edmond Dantès. Edmond is a young sailor who is about to become the captain of his ship. He is engaged to a beautiful girl named Mercédès, and everything seems to be going well for him.

However, Edmond’s life takes a sudden turn when he is falsely accused of being a traitor and is arrested. He is taken to a prison called Château d’If, where he is locked up for a crime he did not commit. Edmond feels betrayed and confused, as he doesn’t understand why this is happening to him.

In prison, Edmond meets an old man named Abbé Faria, who becomes his friend and mentor. Abbé Faria teaches Edmond many things, including languages, science, and philosophy. He also tells Edmond about a hidden treasure on the island of Monte Cristo.

After spending many years in prison, Edmond finally manages to escape with the help of Abbé Faria. Before his friend dies, he reveals the exact location of the treasure to Edmond. With this newfound knowledge, Edmond plans to seek revenge on those who wronged him and find the treasure to secure his future.

Chapter 1 sets the stage for Edmond’s journey from a young and innocent sailor to the powerful and mysterious Count of Monte Cristo. It shows us the injustice he faces and the determination he develops to seek justice and reclaim his life.
