Chapter 1 of “Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank” introduces us to Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who is living in Amsterdam during World War II. Anne is just thirteen years old when she begins writing in her diary, which she calls “Kitty.” She writes about her family, her friends, and her daily life, as well as her fears and hopes for the future. Anne’s family is forced to go into hiding when the Nazis begin rounding up Jews, and they live in a secret annex for two years. Despite the difficult circumstances, Anne remains optimistic and determined to survive. This chapter sets the stage for the rest of the book, which chronicles Anne’s experiences during the war and her eventual capture by the Nazis.
