In chapter 10 of Gone with the Wind, Scarlett O’Hara attends a barbecue at the Wilkes’ plantation. She is excited to see Ashley Wilkes, the man she loves, but is disappointed when he announces his engagement to his cousin, Melanie Hamilton. Scarlett becomes jealous and tries to win Ashley’s affection, but he remains loyal to Melanie. Meanwhile, Scarlett’s father, Gerald, gets drunk and causes a scene, embarrassing Scarlett. Despite the drama, Scarlett enjoys the party and dances with Rhett Butler, a charming and mysterious man who she finds intriguing.
