In chapter 2 of the book Hatchet, we learn more about the main character, Brian. He is on a small plane flying over the Canadian wilderness when the pilot suddenly has a heart attack and dies. Brian is left alone in the plane, with no idea how to fly it or where he is. He manages to crash-land the plane in a lake and swims to shore, where he is faced with the daunting task of surviving in the wilderness with no food, shelter, or tools. Brian learns to make a fire and finds some berries to eat, but he realizes that he will need to find a way to catch fish or hunt for food if he wants to survive. He also discovers that he needs to protect himself from the many dangers of the wilderness, such as bears and mosquitoes. Despite the challenges he faces, Brian is determined to stay alive and find a way to be rescued.
