Chapter 2 of the book “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” introduces us to Mr. Popper, a kind and adventurous man who lives in a small town. He loves reading about explorers and their exciting adventures in faraway places. Mr. Popper dreams of going on his own adventure someday.
One day, Mr. Popper receives a surprise package in the mail. When he opens it, he finds a penguin inside! He is amazed and excited because he has never seen a penguin before. Mr. Popper quickly realizes that the penguin needs a cold environment to survive, so he creates a makeshift home for it in the refrigerator.
Mr. Popper’s family is also surprised by the penguin, but they are worried about how they will take care of it. They decide to name the penguin Captain Cook, after the famous explorer. Mr. Popper’s son, Bill, helps him build a small ice rink in the basement so that Captain Cook can have a place to play.
As the days go by, Mr. Popper becomes more and more fascinated by Captain Cook. He reads books about penguins and learns about their habits and behaviors. He realizes that Captain Cook is lonely and needs a companion. Mr. Popper writes a letter to a famous explorer, Admiral Drake, asking if he can send another penguin.
The chapter ends with Mr. Popper eagerly waiting for a response from Admiral Drake. He hopes that soon Captain Cook will have a friend to keep him company. Mr. Popper’s adventure with the penguins is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see what happens next!
