Task: “Getting to Know You”
Objective: To provide students with an opportunity to meet and interact with their classmates while practicing English conversation skills.
Instructions: 1. Divide the students into pairs or small groups of 3-4. 2. Provide each group with a list of questions (see sample questions below) or encourage them to come up with their own. 3. Instruct the students to take turns asking and answering the questions within their groups. Encourage them to engage in meaningful conversations and to actively listen to their peers’ responses. 4. After a designated time (e.g., 10-15 minutes), ask each group to introduce one or two members to the whole class. This can be done by having a representative from each group share interesting information they learned about their group members. 5. Encourage the class to actively listen and ask follow-up questions to show interest in their classmates’ stories. 6. Conclude the activity by facilitating a brief class discussion about the experience and encourage students to reflect on what they learned about their classmates.
Sample Questions: 1. What is your name? Do you have a nickname? 2. Where are you from? Tell us something interesting about your hometown. 3. What are your hobbies or interests outside of school? 4. Do you have any siblings? If yes, tell us about them. 5. What is your favorite subject in school? Why? 6. Have you ever traveled to another country? If yes, where did you go and what did you enjoy most about it? 7. What is your favorite type of music or favorite band/singer? 8. Do you play any musical instruments? If yes, which one(s)? 9. What is your favorite book or movie? Why do you like it? 10. What do you hope to achieve or learn in this English class?
Note: Adjust the questions according to the students’ English proficiency level and cultural context.
