Topic Plan: World Religions - Exploring Sikhism
Desired Outcome: Through investigating and reflecting upon the lives and teachings of significant figures from world religions, and drawing upon moral values as expressed in religious scriptures and other stories, I am beginning to understand how these have influenced the morality of world religions.
Level: Second Level (Scottish Curriculum)
Duration: 6-8 weeks
Week 1: Introduction to World Religions and Sikhism - Introduce the concept of world religions and their significance in shaping moral values. - Provide an overview of Sikhism, its origins, and key beliefs. - Explore the life and teachings of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. - Discuss the importance of Guru Nanak’s teachings in shaping Sikh morality.
Week 2: Sikh Scriptures and Moral Values - Introduce the Sikh holy book, Guru Granth Sahib, and its significance. - Explore selected passages from Guru Granth Sahib that emphasize moral values such as equality, compassion, and selfless service. - Engage students in discussions and reflections on how these moral values influence Sikhism’s approach to social justice and equality.
Week 3: Sikh Rituals and Moral Practices - Investigate the significance of Sikh rituals, such as the Five Ks (Kesh, Kara, Kanga, Kachera, and Kirpan), in shaping Sikh morality. - Discuss the moral values associated with these rituals, such as maintaining identity, discipline, and readiness to defend the weak. - Encourage students to reflect on how these rituals and moral values can be applied in their own lives.
Week 4: Sikhism and Interfaith Dialogue - Explore the importance of interfaith dialogue in Sikhism. - Discuss Sikhism’s teachings on religious tolerance, respect for diversity, and the promotion of harmony among different faiths. - Engage students in activities that promote understanding and respect for different religious beliefs and practices.
Week 5: Sikhism and Social Justice - Investigate the role of Sikhism in promoting social justice and equality. - Explore the concept of “seva” (selfless service) and its significance in Sikhism. - Discuss the contributions of Sikh individuals and organizations in addressing social issues and promoting equality globally.
Week 6: Reflection and Assessment - Provide opportunities for students to reflect on their learning journey throughout the topic. - Encourage students to create a personal reflection on how the lives and teachings of significant figures from Sikhism have influenced their understanding of morality. - Assess students’ understanding through a written reflection, group discussions, or a creative project.
Note: This topic plan can be adapted to include other world religions as well, allowing students to compare and contrast moral values across different faiths.
