Sub-Strand: Extensive Reading

Lesson 1: Introduction to Extensive Reading and Text Selection Objective: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to select suitable reading materials from a variety of texts.

  • Introduce the concept of extensive reading and its benefits.
  • Discuss the importance of selecting appropriate reading materials.
  • Provide examples of different types of texts (newspapers, magazines, class readers, and poems).
  • Engage students in a group activity where they select a text from each category and justify their choices.
  • Assign individual reading tasks where students select a text of their choice and write a short paragraph explaining why they chose it.

Lesson 2: Reading for Information and Pleasure Objective: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to read a variety of materials independently for information and pleasure.

  • Review the concept of extensive reading and its purpose.
  • Discuss the difference between reading for information and reading for pleasure.
  • Provide examples of texts suitable for each purpose (e.g., news articles for information, short stories for pleasure).
  • Assign reading tasks where students read a text for information and another for pleasure.
  • Conduct a class discussion to share their findings and experiences.

Lesson 3: Fluency Strategies for Finding Information Objective: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to use fluency strategies such as previewing, skimming, and scanning to find necessary information.

  • Introduce the concept of fluency strategies and their importance in reading comprehension.
  • Explain and demonstrate previewing, skimming, and scanning strategies.
  • Provide practice exercises where students apply these strategies to find specific information in different texts.
  • Conduct a group activity where students work together to find information using the fluency strategies.
  • Assign individual tasks where students read a text and answer comprehension questions using the fluency strategies.

Lesson 4: Judging Text Appropriateness Objective: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to judge the appropriateness of a reading text based on theme, interest, and language complexity.

  • Discuss the importance of selecting texts that match their interests and reading abilities.
  • Introduce the concept of theme and language complexity in texts.
  • Provide examples of texts with different themes and language complexity levels.
  • Engage students in a group activity where they analyze and discuss the appropriateness of different texts.
  • Assign individual tasks where students read a text and write a short paragraph justifying its appropriateness based on theme, interest, and language complexity.

Lesson 5: Review and Assessment Objective: To review the concepts covered in the sub-strand and assess students’ understanding.

  • Conduct a review session where students summarize the key points learned in each lesson.
  • Provide a variety of texts and ask students to select suitable reading materials based on the concepts covered.
  • Assess students’ understanding through a written or oral assessment, where they apply the skills learned to judge the appropriateness of a given text.

Note: Throughout the sub-strand, encourage students to read independently and maintain a reading log to track their progress and reflect on their reading experiences. Provide opportunities for students to share their favorite texts and recommend them to their peers.
